Very calm ambience of heathland and forest spring afternoon.
Afternoon in the spring in a vast forest area that is located between the villages of Rijen, Oosterhout, Teteringen and Dorst. I am standing on a large open moorland that is part of this water collection area. A railway line runs at seven hundred meters. Because of its beauty, some people walk and cycle here. Birds are on a decent distance.
The area consists mainly of coarse pine forest that was planted in the heathland at the beginning of the 19th century. This area was known as Seterse Heide. Around 1850 much forest was cut down again, because the area was used as a military training ground. Sand drifts were created, and the nearby hamlet of Seters even had to be protected from the advancing sand with an oak coppice wall. Staatsbosbeheer (State Forest Service) acquired the area in 1899. It was replanted and the soldiers moved elsewhere.
