Calm Spring Day in the park outside the city wall on the South of the city of Zaltbommel in the Netherlands.
Every 15 minutes the carillon of the Gasthuiskapel (former hospital chapel) plays and the church bell of the Maartenskerk (old church in the city center) strikes.
Birds sing in the trees but are at a nice distance from the microphones so that it does not sound too loud.
Different families walk along the paths in the park. Their low-key voices and shuffles provide a friendly atmosphere.
In the distance you can hear the striking quiet sound of the traffic, usually it is no more than buzzing. For a moment a horn or an engine. That's all.
Behind me at about 600 meters, north of the city, the river Waal flows. One of the busiest rivers in Europe, but you don't hear the ships because the wind comes from the south. Happy me.
Short history Zaltbommel
The city of Zaltbommel is more than a thousand years old. The first mention of the city as 'Bomala' dates from the year 850. In the 13th century Zaltbommel grew into an important trading city. December 13, 1315, the city was granted city rights and the fortifications were built, which are still there today.
On July 31, 1572, Zaltbommel was taken by Watergeuzen. The Spaniards then besieged the city.
At the insistence of Maurits van Nassau, the city was further strengthened. Before this modernization was completed, the Spaniards besieged the city again during the siege in 1599.
Zaltbommel was connected to the rail network in 1869. Between 1910 and 1923, the Zaltbommel municipal tram runs between the center and Zaltbommel station.
