The carnival in Wenns has a long history, as it was already being held regularly in the 19th century. This is proven by the few written records that have survived. The oldest surviving footage dates back to 1910.
The roots of the carnival go back to a pre-Christian blessing cult. Even the ancient Germanic tribes held winter carnival parades with masked figures. The meaning of carnival has remained the same to this day: The good spirits triumph over evil and at the same time bestow blessings for fruitful growth.
