I was out on the edge a few mornings ago, the one we used to visit, you remember? Or maybe it was a different space, sometimes it's hard to recall. A calm morning with a slight breeze, just enough wind to make it hard to hear anything else, yet I listened carefully.
Sun, washing across the noise floor, every crystalline pebble rooted in a mossy halo. I heard an echo of some unknown source, sounded like it was coming from across the valley, almost like some sort of reverberant hum. I could barely see it in the fog, modulating the valley below.
Looking south a bright light appeared, strangely vivid from such distance. Even being so far away I felt it was right in front of me. A fragment of light spun out from this being, catching itself on the lake and reflecting back toward me. It landed on a rock, burning into the moss a familiar form. I moved to clear my vision, to get a little closer to this quiet star.
A ringing in my ears, the wind berries, and moss, and roots, and the phone in my pocket all singing in harmony, not loud or soft, simply present.
Lost in the gaze of this undulating light I stumbled, falling forward toward the canyon below. Looking across as the dust settled I noticed the being had left, leaving only scattered illumination across the valley.
Uncanny, I stepped forward
