Soundscape of Dundrum Bay estuary in Murlough Nature Reserve. All sounds are quite distant but a lot of gain has been added. Heard are a wide range of seabirds, seals (howling and grunting), the distant sea and near the end, some dogs barking. There is some woodland just beside the beach and some woodland birds can also be heard.
Recorded using a pair of Lewitt LCT540s in ORTF arrangement into a Zoom F4. This file can be looped.
This is very near to Ballykinlar Barracks which the Ministry of Defence uses for training, and there are signs warning about this. As I was looking for the best location from which to do this recording, I wandered out across the sand to get closer to where the seabirds were congregating but a recorded voice suddenly erupted from a loudspeaker across the estuary telling me that I had entered a restricted area and should go back. I went back. As I moved further round the bay I could then see the red flag hoisted atop a small hill, warning of upcoming live-fire training and sure enough, about an hour later when I had retreated to the sand dunes, I could hear the gunfire.
