So I put my hydrophones in the upper reaches of the Baron River (Mount Hypipamee National Park, far North Queensland - Australia) expecting to hear only gurgling and bubbling, but to my surprise there was some aquatic creatures communicating (sounds a little like crickets). I suspect it's either a fish, crustacean or insects of some sort. If anyone knows what these are please let me know. Recording chain: Home made hydrophones from Panasonic WM61-A - Edirol R09HR.

That really is Digital Fish Music. Very nice. You can actually hear aquatic sounds with your "ears" by swimming on your back. It is as if the sound is transmitted through the cerebelum, try it, you can feel it in the back of your neck. The majority of the sounds will be aquatic insects.

Maron...mmmm...unfortunately it was a national park :) I have an inquiry lodged with the park authorities and will report back.

Weird - totally unexpected and bizarre. We all have heard dolphins etc but like most people I reckon I have a complete ignorance of any possible sounds by other aquatic creatures so I would love to know what these are. The stream looks perfect for marron. Great photo!
I think you should post this question in the forum.
