Inspired by the behavior of insects, which do not elaborate a detailed map of the environment in which they move but merely remember important reference points such as food sources or the nest, the micro drones moved by autonomously exploring the unknown environment; the main idea behind the new navigation method was to reduce expectations to the extreme: small robots were required who were only capable of returning to the base station. The swarm of robots first scattered into the environment leaving each component the choice of a preferred direction, different from that of the other members of the swarm. After exploration, the robot insects returned to the wireless beacon located at the base station; but something went wrong and the swarm of micro drones went mad;
