VLF reception from a WR-9STL dual H-field receiver the morning of 8 June 2017 at unspecified location north of Chester, Montana, USA just off Laird Road. Only one side of the receiver was used. No additional processing was applied.
Sounds captured include many "tweaks", several varieties of whistlers, sferics, some prominent static crashes from lightning visible on the distant horizon, low-level 60 Hz AC hum and some of its accompanying harmonics from the many above-ground electric utility lines that crisscross the open landscape.
The WR-9STL receiver itself was designed and constructed by Stephen McGreevy (http://www.auroralchorus.com). It was connected to a single two-turn delta loop antenna erected on 10 m mast with a reception area of approximately 200 sq m oriented to magnetic east-west. Recording was made directly from one side of the receiver (mono) and mirrored to both stereo line inputs of a Fostex FR-2LE recorder with Oade Bros Super MOD.
