These are samples of an Aztec drum, the tlapanhuehuetl (try to pronounce that). It's a huge bass drum, similar in size to about 3-4 regular drumkit bass drums stacked. Unfortunately Freesound doesn't allow images to be attached, otherwise there would be a photo here.
This drum belongs to a Mexican master percussionist Juan Botas, he specialises in pre-Hispanic percussion and wind instruments.
Four velocity zones, 1 is lowest, 4 is highest. Each sample has been equalised to compensate for microphone response and somewhat normalised.
Shure SV100 microphone direct to a Roland UA-1G sound interface.

I forgot to mention. After first airing, it will only remain in the program Gallery for one week before replaced by the next week's show, so let me know if you didn't get it.

Hey, great sound! I'm using it with some other sounds including ones from Youtube and another site with some freely downloadable Brazilian native music near the end of my radio show tonight, which is a special for Halloween. Find links to listen and download here.
