These are samples of an Aztec drum, the tlapanhuehuetl (try to pronounce that). It's a huge bass drum, similar in size to about 3-4 regular drumkit bass drums stacked. Unfortunately Freesound doesn't allow images to be attached, otherwise there would be a photo here.
This drum belongs to a Mexican master percussionist Juan Botas, he specialises in pre-Hispanic percussion and wind instruments.
Four velocity zones, 1 is lowest, 4 is highest. Each sample has been equalised to compensate for microphone response and somewhat normalised.
