Recording of power looms in action, Lao Da Fang village, Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China.
In this rural village, a cottage industry of embroidered cloth production has developed. Each farmhouse seems to have an attached shed with several power looms running 24/7, making drapes and table cloths.
The patterns made by these looms are controlled by rotating punch-cards, a system invented in 1801 and referred to as a Jacquard loom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacquard_Loom).
