This recording of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) song is part of a series of recordings from an oceanic soundscape project using a deep-sea cabled observatory off the California coast. More information about this research project is available in a publication.
Individual sounds in a humpback whale song are organized in repeated phrases known as themes; a collection of themes comprises a song. This recording represents a single song, which was repeated by an individual during a song session. Song structure is easier to hear if you download the recording and play it back at accelerated speed. You can also hear humpback whale song on our live stream, particularly during the months of November through January.
