This sound is a processed monotron beep.
The headphones output from the monotron was fed into the mic input on my laptop soundcard. The sound was frequency split with the lower frequencies triggering a Tracker (free VST effect from mda @ smartelectronix, tuned as a suboscillator).
The higher frequencies were fed to Saro (a free VST amp sim by antti @ smartelectronix).
You can notice that the sound varies considerable from one note to the next. This often happens in the monotron, but the split band processing greatly exagerates and contributes to the effect.
You will notice that from the 4th or 5th note onwards there is no sub-oscillator being triggered.
In this sound I have cut out most of the end blips as they sounded bad.
