Inspired by a discussion on the Ambient Online forum:
https://www.ambientonline.org/forum/ambient/sound-design/92341-how-to-synthesize-drum-sounds
Used the Subtractor synth from Reason.
Please refer to the pack description for a full list of the sounds synthesized.
Full list of sounds on this pack, with short descriptions of they were created.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_1_1
Sinewave osc, decaying Amp envelope.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_1
Sinewave osc, decaying Amp envelope. Amp envelope on this synth is fixed to the amplitude. With the filter completely open and the filter env effect set to 0, I redirected the filter env to osc pitch.
In this setting the env is set for maximum amount and shortest possible attack and decay.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_2
As previous, but pitch env decay =6.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_3
As previous, but pitch env decay =12.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_4
As previous, but pitch env decay =24.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_5
As previous, but pitch env decay =36. Longer decays are not very good as a kickdrum because the frequency decay now takes so long that the sound finishes before it reaches a low enough pitch. These longer decay times for pitch could still work well for electronic tom sounds.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_6
As previous, but pitch env decay =24 and env amount set to 85 (max is 127)
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_7
As previous, but pitch env decay =24 and env amount set to 61 (max is 127)
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_8
As previous, but pitch env decay =24 and env amount set to 35 (max is 127)
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_2_9
This time I set decay and release values for both envelopes and used extremely short notes (so the release part of the envelopes is used). This basically creates a more complex envelope shape with different decay rate during the decay and the release stage.
Amp envelope decay 40, release 49. Pitch envelope decay 22, release 34. Pitch env amount 51.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_3_1
SIne osc, amp env decay 40.
The Subtractor synth offers a dedicated noise osc, with its own controls for level, decay and color. Max value for all these parameters is 127. Settings used: Decay 60, Noise Color 63, Level 40.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_3_2
As previous but with noise osc settings: Decay 42, Noise Color 95, Level 40.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_4_1
Finally, a quite complex patch using the same sine osc, this time with a triangle osc mixed in tuned 5 semitones lower than the sine osc and mixed in 69% sine +41% triangle. Amp env Decay 54.
The noise osc is also used, Decay 42, Colour 95, Level 60.
And a Low-pass filter Freq 29, Res 0 with keyboard tracking and env amout set to max. Filter env Decay 28.
This sounds certainly different (but not necessarily better) than the simpler patches. Also note that use of the filter + filter envelope messes with the lenght of the sound, so you may need to increase the Amp env decay or the sound might become too short.
AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_4_1_compressed
Same sound as AO_Subtractor_Kickdrum_4_1 but compressed in Audacity because the original seemed to lack a bit of power.
