There have been a ton of break-ins on our side of town recently (my next-door neighbors included), and I want to do at least SOMETHING to help deter thieves.
One thing I heard that makes sense to me is playing some kind of ambient sounds in a loop while you're away from the house. For example, you could play some construction noises in the garage (as long as they didn't involve heavy machinery lol), and people talking in the house, television noises, etc. etc.
I'm just looking for some specific samples that might fit the bill for this one. If you know of some things like this, please tell me! I'm going to start searching, but since I want to get this done quickly I thought it would be good to ask for a little help locating this as well.
I'm looking for a relatively long loop, like maybe 15-30 minutes or so, so that if the thief hangs around for awhile, he doesn't pick up on the fact it's a loop. But realistically if the thief got close enough to hear, he/she would probably leave long before 15-30 minutes -- nevertheless, the longer the better. (that's what she said.)
Anyways, thanks in advance to any and all recommendations on this.
Edit: If you have the equipment, and time, you could simply record some ambient noises in your home such as a couple people talking, doing dishes, cooking.. anything. The important thing is that it would sound at least relatively natural. You could just set up the mic and let it run for awhile in your house and I could pull out the good stuff. This is just a suggestion if anyone has the resources and time to do this.
I recorded this sound a while ago:

It is about 45 minutes of two people working in the kitchen, although no voices. I hope you find it helpful!
This is a fascinating use for sounds.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with me.
If anyone else has something like this (for example, garage sounds or otherwise), let me know!
I'm sad to hear that burglaries is on the rise where you live. However there is a tool called Soundborb that lets you randomize the sounds to play, and when. Think about adding a broken glass at some point. Someone knocking on your door and other such sounds. The only point is that you need a lot of sounds to deter the thieves.
Oh and another thing:
Make sure to get a sign from a company that takes care of waterdamages. My exgf's mother claimed one of these signes where it says "Ozone cleaning in progress!". Whenever she was about to get into town doing business then she allways put up that sign at the front door. Keept her house free from burglaries while's the other got their hands full.
