I'm trying to put together a bunch of doors for various door related fun I like to undertake,,,
whilst I can find some great doors - whats not so easy is to get a range of dynamics for a particular door.
I mean the real world dynamics - whereby someone can close a door in several ways.. confidently, slowly , hesitantly, angrily, etc
this is a big challenge... does anyone out there have a nice quiet house and half an hour or so to make a pack of doors? or a range of doors.... a natural reverb is good.
that would be absolutely awesome should that happen!
thanks world!
sure. I've got time to kill. What size doors you like? small? Medium? Large? What make? Wood? Medal? Interior? Exterior?
thanks!
well I'm after average house hold doors - so I guess wood.. solid or hollow... mostly interior would be nice..
nice quiet place would be terrific,, and variations on 'acting' with the door.,,
be interesting to see what comes up!
It's great you're expanding the door sample collection available here.
I found the most useful door types are "standard" "slam" "creak/squeek" and very rarely there is use for soft ones. The perspective is more important. Close-up, back-in-the-room, somewhere-in-the-corridor/staircase. The later can be somehow simulated via reverb, but the close/dry and far/roomy for every door is very helpful.
My pack of doors here on freesound http://www.freesound.org/people/matucha/packs/7186/
Some of the samples were just fast "opportunity" recordings where there was nice door and I had my kit with me. Some of them are from my studio, though these are a bit booring modern doors.
I wonder what happened to this one http://www.musicofsound.co.nz/blog/crowd-source-fx-library-1-finished .
but imagine for sake of argument lets say u are doing the TV show different strokes.. or mork an mindy? if u prefer british TV then the good life - or more recently 'spaced'
imagine all the different scenes that could take place in that same set..
its the same doors but variations on how hard they close them...
I think people might get a lot of use out of a good set of doors?
Oh... I have nothing against variety. Do not hesitate to record huge amount of variations. It is useful. Though some of the "articulations" are more useful than other.
imagine for exampe - the door cant open? so its really someone yanking on a door.
or perhaps the door doesnt quite close...
these are all sounds that would "flow' as part of a pack,,, right now its quite exhausting to find all the constituent parts for a similiar door in a similiar space..
I would go for a basic living room type of scenario... so not too dry but not cavernous..... cavern is easy to add..
i guess I mentioned the TV shows as u can imagine the short guy being sneaky, angry etc...

I've also added some sounds to my pack, but it's waiting for moderators to accept them.
thanks ! I look forward to hearing them!
actually your pack has already been very useful mutucha!
BTW - how will I know when they are up?
cheers!
(it's) still in the "pending" state. It's just 6 files... one of them is window, one is drawer and one cupboard door. But all of them useful for layering and door related fx.
hi matucha - great recordings! you do have some soft and hard ones which makes them very usable!
I will upload some doors I recorded here too!
let me know if you need anything else from Hong Kong!!!
thanks!
i havent chopped this up -
http://www.freesound.org/people/martian/sounds/180746/
but this is an approach to recording wild 'foley' sounds... has different variations on a pass - and has slower steps as well as I got tired? ( maybe some nice scuffs as if starting to walk and stopping walking )
any one have wooden floorboards or a wooden stage / stairs ?
Sounds useful Martian .
I've uploaded another creaky door http://www.freesound.org/people/matucha/sounds/181458/ . It was recorded for a scene in a radio drama with the mics that recorded voices (two U87Ai in XY) and it fitted the stereo image/depth of that play perfectly. For general use it could be too much on one side, but well... then you can use it in mono.
great recording!
wished more people recorded like this!!
actually getting the equipment in postion set up etc takes longer than a few extra performances..
but I always do a few articulations and paces of each item - as well as on most of my recordings I put some 'freestyle' on the end... pays dividends later!
I have a door that's hard to close: http://freesound.org/people/qubodup/sounds/181950/ Comes with pictures!
The mic was on the floor right next to the door opening, in the room, into which the door does not swing. I closed it from the room into which it swings.
As to Hong Kong sounds: perhaps a Taoist or Buddhist temple? - Ambience or church bell equivalents for example.
On the side: I have been watching many "The Simpsons" episodes (Season 21-24) lately and they seem to use the same sample for metal doors and gates. Quite frustrating.
