    Newbie Seeks Mentor

I am new to sound recording. I have just purchased a Sony PCM-M10.

Seeking someone with similar gear to give me advice and tips over the coming months.

I am looking to do natural field sound: forest, birds, sea etc.

    Cheers

    Hi Kernowrules,

You should go out with your mic. and record some stuff. That's it.

    Cheers

I know what you mean - I did just that.

The device I have has few settings so it is fairly straight forward.

I guess we all learn by mistakes.

Can you give me some advice on 'workflow' - photography term so not sure if applies in this context. It refers to importing the .wav from the PCM-M10 to the laptop and converting it. At present I just drag and drop the .wav to a directory. Then I upload to this site and listen. I have seen flacc format mentioned. I guess this is a codec conversion I can get somewhere to speed the upload up after conversion. Is it as simple as that or are there other more automated methods?

I highly recommend reading The Sound Effects Bible: How to Create and Record Hollywood Style Sound Effects by Ric Viers. it tought me a great deal and has some sections which may be of particular help to you such as ten commandments for recording and ten commandments for editing.
the thing I found most difficult when making my first proper field recordings was setting my levels appropriately to avoid system noise. Recording louder sounds - traffic, rivers etc is easier than capturing high quality quiet sound.
