Put simply, the microphone that I use is terrible. It's your standard $25 headset microphone, so it picks up a TON of background static.
you perpetually hear "fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff" as you're recording something.
So, in lieu of this, I'm looking for a way to increas the clarity of my recordings so I can make samples up to the quality standards that Freesound has to offer.
Are there any simple tricks that the community has to offer, or alternatively where I can get a recordist-quality microphone that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars?
Get another 500 dollars. OR buy a nicer microphone. Target has some dynamic microphones. but it always depends on the job you're looking for. If you are looking for a Loud sound. Stay away from Cap. mics. (they're more sensitive than your normal dynamic microphone)
What program do you use as a DAW? I used to use Cool Pro 2. but then i switched to Pro Tools / Logic / Reason.
A few hundred bucks goes a LONG way man.
so it picks up a TON of background static
Is this file an example of the 'static ?

What sort of sounds are you interested in recording mostly ?
Well, for a better representation, listen to the commentary in one of my Wiremod Tutorial videos on Youtube:

Turn up your volume and you can hear the white noise my microphone generates.
To answer your other question, I'm interested in recording the sounds that mechanisms make, and ambient noises.
I've been trying to get a clean recording of the sound my metal CO2 airsoft pistol makes when it's cocked. It sounds like the real thing... but my mic quality just doesn't pick it up clearly enough to pick up the satisfying "click-ping" it makes.
