A really interesting Ted Talks in which a colour blind man explains how a special device reads colour and translates it into different tones. It's truly amazing how the brain is able to adapt to different stimulus.
Although this is an old talk and technology has undoubtedly advanced a lot since then it is still quite fascinating. If nothing else, this charming man (and his outfit) will surely brighten your day!

Amazing, I'm glad you shared that link; it led me to discover a lot of very interesting videos about the visual through audio technology.
I also found out about this incredible device as well, that allows blind people to 'see' by taking visual information and translating it to stimulation of the tongue. It's not sound based, but it is another amazing example of how the brain adapts and learns to translate information. They liken learning to use the device to learning a language.
What I found really fascinating was that it actually began to stimulate the visual cortex in the brain.
