Elementary wave 11 is my most downloaded sound so far. Was used in the TV series "Being Human" back when it was a Cc0 license. Changed it to attribution because people were stealing it and preventing people from using it on YouTube. It's probably still being stolen. Not sure though how it is being downloaded so much and from where. Surprised I've been here for almost six years. 😎

CC0 is forever : not possible to tighten the CC license given to a published work, can only slacken it.

Kind of knew that but figured I should change it anyway. Freesound is suppose to implement a license history for each sound so people know when it was a different license. I just got tired of the constant messages from people saying John Blow has copyright over the sound. But this topics isn't about license so I digress.

Impressive download numbers. Seems like simple sounds are most wanted? Makes sense. Hard to use a more “advanced” sound in a track or video. That would draw all attention. Tags related to sound fx seems to be what ppl are locking for? Think there is some statistics on this somewhere. So, if you are in this for down loads, make sound fx.
I have a youtube video with quite a lot views. Have to brag. Also simple. I’m reading a small kids story (when I’m having a cold). The music made with… old version of Cubase? Don’t remember. I know it was made with software.

Similar to what others have said, to me it seems that the simpler sounds are the ones with more downloads.

    http://freesound.org/people/InspectorJ/sounds/336598/
Footsteps: Not even that good quality of footstep, but people seem to have found a use for that. Took only a minute to create (and a convenient carpet refurbishment!)

    http://freesound.org/people/InspectorJ/sounds/339326/
Bird Whistling: Again, pretty awful quality listening back to it. Just happened to walk by some loud birds on the way to the train station. For some reason it seemed good enough for DRAM to use it in a music video (still haven't heard a response from him on the lack of attribution, but eh... not worth my time)

Ticking Clock: Again, took less than a minute of work and has a lot of noise in the ticks. I cut and pasted the ticks individually (and if you look at it deeper, some of the ticks don't last a full second - whoops!).

But yes - an interesting topic to discuss!

Spot on! It's "Usable Content" over "Quality" makes popularity.

I EQed any quality out of an already average recording for my biggest downloader. For a short while it appeared on well over a thousand(google searched strangelygnarled) Free Ringtone Spam sites with no credit or acknowledgement.

This seems to be my most popular:

    https://freesound.org/people/Headphaze/sounds/177101/

It's no surprise that all my most popular uploads are of the 'horrific' nature. People seem to like using horror stuff because I see other horror soundscapes garnering a lot of attention.
