    Why registering if it's free?

I really don't understand why platforms like freesound force you to register if the sounds are free?
While registration a reCaptcha is triggered, which belongs to Google. Don't tell me registration is free if you have this spyware build in into your website, collecting a lot of data.

    We get alot of spam.

Registering; 90% insures that users are genuine uploaders.

I meant the download part. If something is free to download, why forcing people to register (and exploit their data to Google)?

    Hi,

We agree the recaptcha should be replaced ideally by something non-google. We’ll do it at some point. We did remove google analytics recently.

However registration is useful for many things. For example for keeping a history of downloaded items that can help with attribution. Of course also for statistics that are relevant to us, even if of course we don’t share the data with 3rd parties, nor use it to profile users for ads or anything like that.
