This is assignment 10-b in the course Audio Signal Processing for Music Applications.

Script for creating the sounds

Sounds used:

Cello note: http://www.freesound.org/people/bwv662/sounds/246923/
Bassoon note: http://www.freesound.org/people/Carlos_Vaquero/sounds/154278/
Bass note: http://www.freesound.org/people/Corsica_S/sounds/43976/
Djembe players: http://www.freesound.org/people/E330/sounds/157940/

First I created all needed notes in the different parts of the music by using Frequency Scaling in the Harmonic Transform in sms tools.

Here are the different scale factors. I also adjusted the pitch because the cello note is sharp and the bassoon note is flat.

Cello.
The sound is 20 cents sharp so each factor must be multiplied by r^(-20/1200)
Pitches needed (half notes relative to original sound pitch): 7, 5, 2,
2^(7/12 - 20/1200) = 1.4811
2^(5/12 - 20/1200) = 1.31951
2^(2/12 - 20/1200) = 1.10957

Bassoon
The sound is 18 cents flat so each factor must be multiplied by r^(18/1200)
Pitches needed (half notes relative to original sound pitch): 4, 7, 9
2^(4/12 + 18/1200) = 1.27309
2^(7/12 + 18/1200) = 1.51397
2^(9/12 + 18/1200) = 1.69937

Bass.
Pitches needed (half notes relative to original sound pitch): -3, 4, 2, -7, 7, 5
2^(-3/12) = 0.840896
2^(4/12) = 1.25992
2^(2/12) = 1.12246
2^(-7/12) = 0.66742
2^(7/12) = 1.49831
2^(5/12) = 1.33484

Then I edited in the notes for the cello and the basson parts. They are the same melody with the same pitches.
I then did a HPS Morph of the bassoon sound going to a cello sound and back to cello and used that in the music as melody.

The bass notes are just the generated wav files edited in at the right place.

Finally I added the Djembe players

Thank you!

Actually I first loaded the samples into a software sampler in my DAW and put together the notes there. Then I tuned the samples using another, correctly tuned, instrument as reference to find out how many cents sharp/flat the samples were. Then after that I calculated the tuning factor for each note that I needed for the piece and performed each transformation in sms-tools. Then I just placed the different samples at the right places in the DAW and removed all other instruments from the piece to only leave transformations done from sms-tools.

Nice work, excellent combination of technical and musical skills.
How did you determined the off pitch factor for each sound, did you use sms-tools, Sonic Visualizar or any other approach?
