A 2 meter long metal ruler brings into oscillations simply by bending it and releasing it. It starts vibrating up and down with a low frequency which you cannot hear until over 15-20 Hz. I shorten the jumping tail, whereby the frequency increases. There is still lots of energy stored, so I shorten the vibrating tongue gradually, the frequency os self resonance continues and so it does as long as there is energy left. The crescendo goes rapidly up to some 250 Hz and the energy is consumed and the vibration stops.
