How do you record the sound of an engine big as a house. It's a lot of other sounds, like diesel generators, so the best I could do was to hold the microphone close to the enormous combustion system. You hear how the diesel engine is started with emptying a whole compressed air tank into the first strokes, then 1/4 of full speed, followed by 1/2 speed and finally economy speed, which gives the huge ship 17 knots. The propeller rotates 80 rpm. Sounds To little? In emergency situation our engine can increase to as much as 110 rpm. The engine is a 10 cylinder, long stroke, 40,000 HP Insley.
Anyone who has been working with such monster engines may have some thoughts. I would like to record the sound of the diesel engine for M/S Emma Maersk, 110,000 HP
