Labor. It is the labor of the unskilled, the precariously employed, the affective laborers, the manual and technical laborers, through which life is reproduced materially and symbolically. The world is made in time by us, but not for us; it is, as one might have said in another time more optimistic than our own, up to us to become self-conscious of our collective world-making power as laborers and re-claim it for ourselves.
We can hear this process of world-making. We can trace this process of world-making through the critical-poetic practice of field recording. To listen to and record the aleatory sounds of urban environs is to hear the alienated character of work and seize it as a site of opposition and invention. Re-composition is the means and end. Field recording is a revolutionary sonic praxis; composition is the extension of the field of struggle and domination into the sphere of form.
One sound taken from the 'Microblocks, vol.1' percussive found sound sample-pack. The sample-pack features 135 unique field recordings culled from the ordinary soundscapes of Santa Cruz, CA.
