People, jong and old, skating on the natural ice of a small water called ‘Kloosterwiel’ near the city of Zaltbommel in the Netherlands.
Some are sitting on chairs and driven around by someone behind on skates. Others skate on all kind of skates.
At the right hand side, you can hear the people on the waterfront. Here they do on their skates, socialize, eat and drink there own foods, brought from home, as a good Dutchman ;-).
A young boy tells a friend that he should not come to a certain place. Yesterday there was a woman fell through the ice. Recorded on >20meters.
History of the Kloosterwiel
The Kloosterwiel (Monastic Wheel) arose because the Waal River broke through a levee. This happened even before dikes were in the Bommelerwaard (the area). Such a levee break is called a crevasse and forms an elongated, shallow pond. At the Kloosterwiel is this still be seen well. Kloosterwiel probably originated in the tenth century, at least before the dikes that were built in the Bommelerwaard between the tenth and eleventh centuries. The wheel was formerly known as St. Peter's Wheel. The wheel water level rises and falls with the river, the influence of the river Waal is keenly felt here. The hiking trails are now part of the higher and drier seepage dams.
Haunting monks
According to legend, here on the site of the Kloosterwiel there was a monastery. The story goes that monks wandered the old strict rules of discipline and diligence. Excess, drunkenness and lust were introduced in the monastery. As punishment the river Waal began to swirl and fizz and engulfed the monastery with its inhabitants. Instead, there is now the Monasterywheel (OK, not really, the monastery is located next to the wheel, lying on the spot where vegetable gardens). But fore a long time been resurrected monks at night, dressed in white robes, passersby to withdraw the wheel. Local residents therefore never came here after sunset. Accidentally freesound passers, you have been warned now!! Remember the coordinates of the wheel on the map; 51.81038 5.23177 .
