I was experimenting with my R44 using a spaced array mic arrangement in my front yard and a Magpie that was milling about on my front lawn, took off and skimmed about 10cm above one of the microphones. You can hear the wind from the flapping wings hit the mic. Recording chain: Audio Technica AT3032 stereo mic pair - Edirol R44 digital recorder (24 bit 44.1 kHz - 16 bit 44.1 kHz using Edison wave editor).

Thanks for putting up this excellent recording. I've used it in an animation...here

that whooping sound birds' wings make when they take off startled-fast always fascinates me. Never figured out a way to record it, but happenstance works just wonderfully!
...there's an idea, put your zoom in a plastic bag and let the birds go to town on it, I bought myself a pair of Behringer C2 mics for such 'dangerous' assignments, second thoughts, perhaps a hydrophone? :)
A crow can damn close to crapping all over my Zoom last week. Being addicted to recording as I am, I kind of wish it had.
Very nice.
