If the pop-filter is attached to the mic-stand it can transmit the vibration of spit impact to the mic through the stand : sound travels better through solid (mic-stand) than through gas (air).
Pop-filters ideally should have their own stand separate from the mic, (or if connected to the mic-stand some sort of shock absorbing mounting).

Interesting. I was using a double pop filter. Not sure how I managed to spit on the mic, but there you have it.
