This sound was captured from the top of a cooling tower fan at DFW airport's main air conditioning system. The motor is energized at slow speed. After it runs at that speed for a while it then ramps up to full power - soon after it powers down. Originally recorded on BetaSP with a single Sennheiser short gun microphone.

That's a really good sound. The startup itself reminds me of tripods from War of the Worlds. :)
