Recorded around 10:30PM, a freight train headed South out of Portland's industrial area passes by. In the beginning you can hear the gates go down in the distance and eventually everything gets louder as the train passes the mics. Near the end the train speeds up before the gates lift and the waiting cars drive off. Recorded with AT4021 mics into a modified Marantz PMD661.

this... is... the longest train I have ever heard in my life. Ever! How many engines were pulling this train? I'd guess somewhere between 5 and 9, that's kind of what it sounded like.
Gosh, this sound sooo good ! I can't believe what I'm hearing ! One of the best sound I ever hear here.
Not only is this recording so dynamic, but it is incredibly clean! The subtle wind, the distant traffic, the rumble, the bells passing from right to left, the crossing guards coming down...incredible. Every person uploading to freesound should use this as a model.
I like this recoding of; The Never Ending Train
