Thank you for your comment acclivity. There could well have been two birds on the pole. I was hiding behind a cowshed at the time of drumming so I could not actually see any birds. When I tried to sneak up closer I only saw one bird fly away (but another could have flown in the other direction hidden by the cowshed). I now believe it was a Dendrocopos majorbecause I saw a flash of red beneath the tail which I was assured today is not present in the lesser. As you probably know these are very shy birds and it is very difficult to get close to them, in response to your interest I shall take binoculars with me from now on to attempt to make a positive identification.
