The first time I heard this sound was when I accidentally rubbed a plate against a glass in the kitchen sink.
I have recreated the sound here on purpose for your listening pleasure (or horror).
Warning: this sound is the stuff of nightmares! Will make the hairs at the back of your neck raise.

Unfortunately there is no 24 bit version, as the recording was made in 16 bit.
