Hi all,
I am an artist working in London and am currently on the search for a sound recording made of the loudest thunderstorm. Whether this is the loudest sound recording made, or a sound recording made of the loudest thunder ever recorded, either is OK. Once I discover the loudest thunderstorm I am going to play it on loop on an iPod without headphones sitting on my lounge windowsill whilst I go out for the day. The photograph of this performative piece will credit the sound source.
Thanks,
Sarah Boulton

Maybe it helps not only to search for "thunderstorm" but both of the words "clap" and "thunder", there are quite some sounds like that here. I guess you are searching rather for a sound with an intense expression rather than a loud recording, as long as it sounds clear?
There is a theoretical limit to sound volume as a function of the density of the medium through which it travels. That's because the rarified portion of a compression wave can only go so far as to become a vacuum. I don't remember what level that equates to for air at common elevation, but my guess is somewhere around 150 dB or so. I could look it up, but I'm lazy.
Above a certain threshold the frontier of the pressure will start to look like a nebula, or even flames .
From the perception point of "view", exttremely loud thunder storm with many thunderclaps will make your ears to adapt and ends up not very impressive. Heavy wall of rumble. What is the most impressive? Singular clap in the right proximity. Not too close because then you get huge spike and the reflections are weak to make it sound enveloping. Not too far to make it muffled and indistinct. That's at least for the recording, in reality being too close is quite a shock even if you're prepared for the event.
I like to record thunderstorms, unfortunatelly this years thunderstorm season was quite weak at my place.
Maybe you find something you like in my pack http://www.freesound.org/people/matucha/packs/11792/
This is my favourite for the atmosphere and for the quietness of the background http://www.freesound.org/people/matucha/sounds/192139/ it was exceptionally quiet time for the city, no traffic noise, almost no wind, just some birds and doogs. Great depth. But too calm to be the loudest thunder of them all .
