Well, technically it's illegal. But I'm sure both methods will be fine as long as the person is not trying to distribute the recordings in any way other than for personal recreational playback.
Spotify has a subscription fee for a reason. Because they pay a big sum of money to royalty collection societies like PRS (MCPS if downloading) for the public performance of copyrighted recordings.
So to avoid this would be a breach of copyright law you see
