Hi, I'm new to this site (love it!), looking for a fully sampled grand piano,
each note & all the varying intensities. I have a midi keyboard that I want to play piano stuff on (the recording software that came with the controller doesn't have a basic piano sound.. I know!?!)
I don't know if a sample like this already exists on here (I would think it does?),
if so, please kindly point me in it's direction. Thanks!
I don't have specific samples, but here's what you can do (and I know this is not what you requested, but for most parts, we don't have the capability to hear the minute differences).
Here on freesound, you're gonna find tons of great piano samples.
The normal process would be to take one note and stretch it out to about half an octave, and then the next one again to about half an octave and so on and so forth. Sometimes there are some imperfections in pitching because you don't have the actual note; you're actually deriving one of the notes by stretching another note up or down an octave. In such cases, it's just trial and effort, but I think you'll save lots of time.
If you do find all the samples, definitely do what you need, but this was just a suggestion.
someone needs to do this, I mean all the fabulous samples people go to lengths to make, yet no one has sampled a piano just each note will do for me. WOULD BE GREAT, tell me if you do. thanks
Best bet: Salamander Grand Piano soundfont - free and open, the package contains the individual samples other than being directly usable with any SFZ player
Second best: Piano One VST by Sound Magic - free, works also on Linux via vsthost or in DAW like Ardour and QTractor
KVR has a really good set of presets for it
i found the first one and just came here to post a link gona read then look into your second segestion. I downloaded your 'best bet' as a torrent using utorrent the unpacking the rar file with win rar. .. great sounding
the piano is a great sound and I still think there should be more samples...of each piano note fading out so I can use an envelope to control it to be shorter if I want . let me know if theres any more great sounding.. like real pinaos or synth... I think salamander grand sounds great. ...if I listen to feint (he producers liquid drum & bass) he using loads of different piano sounds that sound great. im looking for these types of sounds. please post a link + name if you know of any. many thanks
ok so for some reason salamadergrand doesn't even have all the notes so yer I use shortcircuit 1 vst basically is amazing program download it! FREEE
Actually, it does have all the notes; but older versions were affected by a wrong .sfz file that can be corrected as said in this thread:
Also, make sure you have this: SalamanderGrandPianoV3Retuned.sfz
otherwise yours is an older version.
If you have trouble finding the fixed one or fixing it yourself, I can send you the .sfz I fixed myself.
Yeah i would love that, i thought i could cope with shortcircuit 1 (however it doesn't sound that great), but the real samples would be great! my email is: firstname.lastname@example.org ...anything else you need to send this over to me? . Many thanks!! (mine is the older version)
The fixed file is not the only thing you need (I'll email it to you right after writing this) but you can get the update of the samples directly from the links on the homepage where it says "And links to a small update to version3"
Make sure you get the format and sample rate corresponding to the V2 samples you already got, unpack the update right over the V2 files, then add the .sfz file I'm sending you and you're done, happy playing
Haha, im sorry to be a pain. i just relizized this is a sfz file ...which is great if i new what to use to open it! i downloaded wav files before (i know how to make it playable myself). )
...so i downloaded linuxsampler, not sure if it works in a DAW and dont know how to get it to work...
i can follow your steps when i know how to use a sfz file... thank you for you support and the email ) if you could explain sfz to me please.
My bad, I've been too generic and lazy saying "any SFZ player" without detailing a bit
Yes, Linuxsampler will work if it's a recent release, it has been patched for better sfz support.
You might want to try QSampler to act as a GUI for it:
Consider the sfz as the recipe for the player telling it how to use the individual samples; the player reads the sfz, loads all the involved samples, and maps them accordingly.
An alternative player I've used without problem is the free Alchemy Player by Camel Audio, perfectly working via wine on my Debian and AV Linux 6

free piano sounds... use something like shortcircuit 1... then i have to export each note after i have made a melody and use Audacity to cut it so that it is in time. good luck pinao sounds have so much complexity they are simple and can fill a song so it sounds finished alone.
Why all that manual cutting and aligning when you can just use a MIDI DAW like Ardour or Qtractor to compose the melodies and drive the samplers/VSTi's ?
Try the CVPiano. I use it with Reaper and it works amazingly.
It's from what I've tried THE BEST free piano VST. The way they made it, they incorporated real life recordings so when you use the pedal, if you've ever played on an actual piano, you can "hear" the hammers lifting on and off the strings and the strings vibrating. That may be something to like or not like depending on if you want a really clean sound. But unlike other VSTs, when you hold the note, the note doesn't have that weird artificial sound.
Feel quite ashamed now...
I have a grand piano fully sampled with 4 velocities. However, this multi-sample bank is on my PC which blew out quite a while ago. I'm yet to recover the data.
I await a rotten tomato thrown at my head.
Besides this blunder, if you download Native Instruments Kontakt Player (free) you can most probably find a free fully sampled piano in the form of a Kontakt patch (.nki) somewhere on the interweb.
There's also this from a while ago:
The piano vsti at Samsara Cycle Audio is free and excellent
