Check out the Philharmonia Orchestra Sample Library.
You might find what you're looking for in the "phrases and articulations" library, I had a glance at their violin and cello samples and they sound nice.
The university or Ames, Iowa, has lots of nice "classical instruments" samples. I forgot the link, but google might help...

Thanks for finding the link I was too lazy to find myself...
By the way, does anybody knows other violin samples ? I'm trying to make a soundfont of an entire violin section, and I'd need at least three different ones...
I don't know if you can really simulate an entire violin section by adding different samples together. You'll need a lot of samples, and those ones would probably be recorded in different places, with different mics, settings, ... But it's worth to try.
Anyway, I play the cello, I think one day I'll record some one-shot notes, played in different ways, and put the result on freesound.
I thought about it, and made several tests before : with panning and some EQ, it is possible to have a correct result. And, as soundfonts shouldn't be to heavy, it's also possible to take 3 different notes (say A, A#, B), shift 2 of them so that you have three A#. Times three, and you have a nine violins orchestra.
And also a headhake, because it's a lot of work !
I'll wait for your cello samples with impatience ; if you could add to pp, mf and ff a take on which you play really softly with the arco... Try to find the music of the begining of Wings of Desire, by Wim Wenders (1987) to hear what I mean...
I have a link to the old trailer, not the music (sadly), but at least, this time, I had a link !
Maybe you should try the "sampler" that's in the last version of ableton live. It doesn't make real soundfonts, but it has a lot of qualities. About these cello samples, I'll record it, but I first have to buy a new mic, and have some spare time to do it, so that's not for now.
Hey there. I was about to buy samples before I found The Freesound Project. Cool!
If you are running Firefox you can get "Scrapbook" as an addon. Scrapbook is a site ripper that will allow you to save the entire page of AIFF files. It's substantially easier than 'save as' for each file!
For instance, run Scrapbook on each instrument at the MIS site (listed by someone earlier in this thread) and you get a nice pile of good samples.
Good luck!
