I recently stumbled upon this helpful FAQ, and thought it would be useful to people coming here for answers:

Edit: Stickied. We could use this thread to write our own FAQ as well...
Also, check out minidisc.org if you are in the market for Minidiscs.

Some excellent deals on top brand microphones and equipment
I found this to be an interesting read. Actually a thread turned microphone theory manual by audio engineer Harvey Gerst.

Just to follow up on this March 14 post: the link I gave has been taken off-line. Find a replacement here: Harvey Gerst's mic lessons:

Hmm... Why is this this still "sticky" when the FAQ is down (and has been for a while by the looks of things).
Have a closer look. Not all links in this thread are down.

Sorry fellas, I've fixed the link.
Just PM me if any more of my posts need updating.
This was a very useful FAQ--I've downloaded it to keep it handy. Microphones don't go out of date so fast as other electronics, so it's still current in most respects. It also includes instructions for modifying a RadioShack PZM, which I bought way back in the 80s and still have, to use balanced lines. The ASCII illustrations are not elegant (pictures would have been better), but I may yet get around to trying this mod.

Actually I'm surprised this wasn't here so I'm adding it:
I find it an invaluable reference for recommended microphones for all kinds of assorted applications.
