Dare 19 - Beatbox: a Battle - Composition Stage (Rules and Submissions Only)

Woohoo! We've got an abundance of entries to work with, and so my original plan for the composition phase has changed.

Here's the new real dare-y dare:
Use the beatbox samples uploaded so far to compose this particular musical soundscape: a beatbox battle.

This is partly a music piece and partly a soundscape since the beatboxers in the battle will be creating the music and the crowd will be creating the soundscape. Of course, it doesn't only have to be the crowd. There may be technical difficulties, the drop of a mic, some punches fists and boots thrown this way and that... I'm just sayin'. Hint hint, the battle need not be a one-on-one; there can be a whole team taking on another.

The soundscenes could vary from a competition to a beatbox war to whatever your imagination fancies. But the bottom line is, your composition needs to contain both music and a soundscape/scene. Have people get "into" it maaaaan!

Just a quick note: If you think you simply want to compose a song of your own accord than compose a battle, feel free. However, please remember it will not be considered as an entry towards this dare, because we specifically want a battle!

Because all of us compose differently, I want to give a few hints here about what you can do.
For someone who is very rhythmically oriented, you can simply create a battle where one person goes, then the next one does, then the first one goes again and the second and so on and so forth. For those who like melodies, you can also have a minute and a half of one person going first and the next minute and a half (or however much) go second, and that's it if you want to keep things simple.

Here are some conventions and protocols to follow so that we're all efficient and happy:

    Your Entry
    1. Your entry must be between 3 to 5 minutes long.
    2. You can use any samples from the samples uploaded during the warmup stage for this dare (the link to all the sounds is at the end of this post). Keep in mind, some samples may not be tagged dare-19. Please only use those samples that have the tag dare-19. If you want a synth or bass or piano, you will have to slice/process/add effects to the samples, but you are not allowed to use any sounds from outside the dare with some exceptions (see next point).
    3. For the crowd ambience and any other effects, you may use any sound from the freesound database. However, these sounds may only be used in a soundscape/scene capacity, that is, you cannot use any of those sounds to compose the music part of the battle. We will call such sounds "Eff-X" for this dare. The EFF-Xs can be used along with the music, but they must be distinctly heard as part of the soundscape and not the music. Example: Crowd noises at the back of the whole battle.
    4. EDIT: Dunno how I missed this, but you are not allowed to use any of the sounds uploaded by yourself
    5. You must use at the minimum 4 hit sounds, 2 loops and 2 creative sounds. The loops must be a length of at least 1 bar each (just so that they are discernible as a loop).

    6. EDIT 2: You are allowed to record your own (or someone else's voice) for announcing the battler's or team's names, transitions, intro, outro etc in your composition. It we're having a battle, it only makes sense that there be an announcer/moderator in your battle. It is not mandatory, however!
    4. You are allowed to do whatever you want to do to the hits, loops, creative samples and the EFF-Xs. All processing and effects are allowed.

    Submission
    1. It is not mandatory, but you are highly encouraged to upload your submissions to soundcloud (and a link linking back to this entry on your composition's description would be nice, too).
    2. You will then post a reply to this thread stating that you have uploaded the sample to soundcloud (or elsewhere) and include a direct link to your composition. In your reply here, please also mention whether or not you used 4 hit sounds, 2 loops and 2 creative sounds.
    3. In your post either here OR in the description on soundcloud, you will need to provide attribution (meaning give credit) for all the samples you have used. That's how we roll here on freesound!

    Deadline
    1. Because this dare is a little challenging, I will give you about a whole month. Please have your entries ready by the 5th of May, 2013 (Sunday) by 11:59 pm GMT.
If there are enough entries, there will be a voting thread and a subsequent results thread. I am going to upload the results for the warmup stage in a few days (we had the nicest set of samples; it's going to take me a while to go through them all).
Finally, please remember to post any discussion related to the composition stage on the discussion thread here:
    http://www.freesound.org/forum/dare-the-community/33632/

Good luck and have fun with this challenge!

I'm a little confused, so we just try to simulate a beatbox battle by taking other peoples clips and putting them against our beats? So for example, I choose one of my beats from my pack and after its done, I'd have crowd ambience playing for a bit, and after that I play a beat that someone else made and then finish it off with crowd ambience. Like that?

Whoops, dunno how I missed to mention this but the use of one's own sounds is disallowed (edited the "Your entry" section above).
Yes, you are supposed to stimulte a beatbox battle. You can use any of the uploaded samples during the warmup stage for the "music" aspect of the dare, and then you can add crowd sounds in the background (and/or after each battler is done with his or her turn).
You can get creative in many ways! Just make sure you have a music as well as a soundscape aspect to your composition!
PS: Look at the EDITs above. I've made two changes. Remember that you have to use a minimum of 4 hit sounds, 2 loops (each loop's length has to be at least 1 bar so that we can hear the loop during judging), and 2 creative sounds to "compose." wink

I was thinking about this (and I hope y'all have subscribed to this thread), but it only makes sense that if this is going to be a battle, some of you may need announcers. So here's an allowance: you are allowed a fresh recording of yours announcing the battler's/team's names, transitions and all, and asking who won, blah blah. In case some of you are confused about what a beatbox battle is, have a listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQnONw0eEJ8
Changes reflected in the original post.

    6. bigfriendlyjiant (38 ) - Pack 2 - This pack contains 3 sounds which seem to be added by mistake (recordings of a lake, some wind etc), so I took the count down from 41 to 38.

Don't know what happened there! Have gone thru the whole pack and have removed the non-dare sounds. New total pack count is 90 (unless I made another boo-boo)

    Hi folks,

OK, this dare turned into a much bigger challenge than I had anticipated. Firstly, creating my own human beatbox sounds was a challenge as I am not human beatbox skilled at all! Then I thought ok I've got some sounds I can work with, uploaded a pretty big pack to learn that I could not use my own sounds. I nearly gave up at that point. I still want to use my own sounds if nobody else does.
So I cracked on with the dare and used two other members at random, pitching them against each other. Then when writing the track I realised I needed a bit of voice over to announce who was doing what. So after recording myself introducing the beats and downloading packs and crowd samples this has turned into a mega project and when I read over the rules again tonight, think I probably don't even fit the criteria. I guess too many rules can be a problem but I have persevered. Here is my effort, I hope you get the chance to hear it and enjoy and I apologise for not making use of your wonderful breakbeat live recordings, this track is sequenced from your individual stabs n hits:

Remember you can also submit an entry that follows whatever rules you choose. It may not be eligible for voting (if there are enough entries in the first place), but we can definitely comment on your composition!

Since it seems unlikely we may get more entries for this dare by tonight, I'll keep the composition phase of this dare perpetually open. Who knows, someone 2 years down the line may contribute a nice composition!

Results from the warm-up stage will be posted by Friday.

Thank you to all who participated / will participate in either phase!

That is cool, and a really good idea - This way I will be able to participate still.

I had a very nice idea, but have not been able to sit down and make any music for months now due to work pressure.

    It is still on, then!...

    hmmmm..... erm..... I forgot...
