    Hi Bliss,

Thank you for your comment. Feedback is always appreciated.

The collab dares are a bit like the normnal dares, there is a theme or some rules to follow.
That is why they are a dare = challenge.
Previously I have avoided dares where people were supposed to submit sounds because it might put some people off, especially if they felt did not have the required equipment or good enough equipment.

I thought tapes would be easy as everyone old enough tto be participating in the dares would have some old tapes lying around somewhere and a means to play and digitize them. Looks like I was wrong.
    Sorry about that.

I also know that not all dares appeal to everyone. Some people have said to me in the past "Sorry, this theme doesn't really do it for me."
    That is absolutely fine.

I have always included theme/rules so that it was easier to listen to / comment / vote on the pieces side by side. - Not that voting is ever easy.
Posting a dare with no theme or rules might make comparing all pieces even more difficult. But I should not dismiss it without trying it.
So I promise soon we will have a "Free for all" where (pretty much) anything is allowed.
If you have something else in mind in terms of a dare, please PM me. Several participants ideas have been used in dares in the past.

Hi Bliss. I thought the same having no tape gear whatsoever, but then decided I could take part, by using the sounds that fit the genre already available on freesound, and hopefully some of those being posted for the dare.

I just wish the colab dares were more open, and not so closed to a very specific theme.
I do have some old tapes somewhere but no tape deck.

Yes I understand and agree. When it comes to being creative, I think it's best not to be too narrow on the rules since it can infringe on ones creativity and production. However at the same time, if there are no particular rules, there is no particular challenge or aim to achieve. I too have some old tapes somewhere but no deck. Listening to the recent uploads of sounds, I already feel like processing some of them to use them as percussion, but post process isn't allowed, so I hear what you are saying. I'm not completely sure yet I could make a piece of music from samples of tape recordings, that also doesn't infringe copyright laws. Otherwise it may become a 'soundscape' of things we have once recorded on tape.

    I need to clarify this.
This dare has 2 parts. First we upload sounds, then we do something with them.
For the uploaded sounds, we want the pure sound as it was on the tape. Post processing not allowed for the sounds uploaded to Freesound.

Now, when it comes to using the uploaded samples to create the dare pieces themselves... Those rules are not posted yet.
To be honest, I wanted to see how many sounds we would get and what they would be. But at that point I certainly intend to allow processing.

    Hope this helps clarify.

Ahh, now I am getting this. I thought the challenge could only allow tape recorded unaffected samples, then sequenced together. I realise that post processing can seriously change the original sound, but what you want is a platter or original, un-frigged around with taped sounds to start out with.... thereafter, you decide what is going to be acceptable by way of using them to create a piece of music. I thought I could have got away with slicing up some of the samples to iscolate individual noises and do it that way, but thought that musically it might not happen. Really, for someone who hasn't even been able to upload a sound for this challenge I guess I should shut up and see what happens. Since there was note in the last dare that we don't always share discussion, I thought I'd speak up before getting left behind. I'm glad you've clarified the finer points here my friend.

    Discussion is always useful.
And the rules are not always clear.
    Thanks for asking smile

I do believe you can still participate even if you don't submit the sounds. The second part of such submission dares usually requires us to compose something from the material we all upload (even if you weren't able to open any).
The fact that the dares are so closed, I think, gives them the "dare factor," although I'd argue that there were a few dares in the past that were more closed than this one, yet were incessantly fun! smile
Wait for part 2 of this dare; I think you will enjoy it!

Dont be afraid you can play this really loud than you usually do. All Thanks to tape compression and proper A/D converters. Go ahead put your mix channel to 0 db. It doesnt fall apart.

All you need to do is add the tag 'collab-2'. It is important that every sample submitted for the dare has that tag. That will be the best way to assure people can find all the samples later.
    Thanks

The Amiga always sounded pretty cool - I think it had some good exit filters that got rid of most of the aliasing.
There was a bit of aliasing at high frequencies (when a sampler at high notes), but that is no surprise. I can't remember what the typical sampling frequency was. Although the Amiga it could go to a decent sampling/playback frequency, the main limitation was memory - no megabyte samples in those days!

In fact this tape sounds pretty horrible now smile LOL
It is showing its age and the fact that it was played hundreds if not thousands of times.
    But it is still 'cool'.
