I'm discovering the world of soft synth - know nothing about it but it's easy to use it as VST into Ableton Live.
Every synth has presets: if I take a built-in voice and change parameters to obtain a different voice, is it fair to use it for this dare?

By now I tried Chaosynth, Chimera, ZynAddSubFX: do you freesounders know other soft synth which allow to build a voice from zero without modifying a preset?

I don't know those synths, but almost every synth has an "initialize" option, if I understand correctly. That should help you build a sound from scratch.

If you want more options, i know that you can use a couple f features from this site http://www.audiotool.com/

Otherwise, i know that ZynAddSubFX is able to make sounds from scratch.

As afleetingspeck says, if there is an 'initialize' button, great.
Some synths also have 'empty' presets at the end of the presets list. Have a look.

If not, provided you have modified the presets enough, those would be new sounds - so would be acceptable.

    thanks afleetingspeck, Kyster and AlienXXX!
e grazie copyc4t for the useful advice on pm.

Audiotool looks like a funtastic gym.
and yes, ZynAddSubFX let build sound from scratch.
I think I'll use new original sounds & "enough modified" presets wink

I now know enough to stop bother with an almost ot!

As hasd been said by others, I think that every soft synth available has the abilitly to create new sounds. I've been playing around with Rob Papen's Predator, and I have to say it's the most gorgeous sounding synth - soft or hardware I've ever heard! No aliasing!

Well, it's always subjective, but yes, I think so, especially in the higher octaves. It's jsut recently been made avialable in Propellerhead Reasons new Rerack system.

    Predator is amazing indeed.
Rob Papen has new synths coming to the Propellerheads Rack Extension family.
    Great stuff.

Speaking of Rack Extensions, I just created a demo track for the new Synapse Audio 'Antidote' Rack Extension.
They accepted it and put it on their product page!

If you guys want to check it out, here's the link to the RE page:

    Synapse Antidote

(scroll down and click on "Antidote Demo Tracks")

My track is titled "Antidotarie" and it's also on my Soundcloud.

    Antidote is awesome!

    Thanks!

So for this project, are we allowed to use any sounds/tools or should it be exclusively Freesound material?

From Freesound you are allowed to use:
    - Samples of synth sounds (hardware or software, as long as they are synthesized sounds are OK).
    - Any (natural) sounds that you use as 'source material' for sound design or synthesis methods (granular, spectral, or more conventional or even DIY methods). Think use of samples as a for of synthesis. The resulting sound should be very different from the starting sound. Listening to the result, one should not be able to identify the source sound.

    Non Freesound sounds allowed:
    - Sounds you synthesized yourself. Hardware or software synths are OK. You must not use preset sounds but you can modify preset sounds into something new.
    - If you use non-Freesound sounds, please upload them to Freesound.

    Not allowed:
    - Synth presets
    - Non modified sounds which are not synthesized. This includes natural sounds and instruments.

I've been super busy but now I finally got a moment to scour for samples.
    This will be fun indeed!

Right now I'm away from home, so I won't be doing much for the next day or two. But I'm exited about having someone to work with. It's the first time for me. I've been searching a little, and the bookmark function is worth gold in this dare, because we are able to share without doing anything other than bookmarking.

I'm finding it hard to contain my excitement.

A real nerd when it comes to synthetic sounds.

    Great!
Don't forget that if you create your own sounds (as opposed to or in addition to Freesound samples) you need to add those new sounds to Freesound too - that is part of the dare rules (although I trust you guys and won't be checking. The idea is to expand the Freesound database if you are creating good sounds, as they might also be of use to others).
