    The First Co-Lab Dare

    Guys and girls

This week is particularly busy for me, both at work and at home, so be patient if I am a bit slow to respond to any questions you may have.

    Co-Lab Dare Theme: Synthetic Sounds

For this dare I am going to ask you to use exclusively synthetic sounds.
A lot of the interest and discussion here at Freesound often is about recorded sounds (mostly meaning field recordings and the like).
There are many reasons to be exicted about synth(etic) sounds. Firstly because they represent a giant leap for man - when we first became able to create sounds that were neither natural nor created from objects around us. - We take it for granted today, but before the invention of electronic circuits, no one had ever heard a pure saw or square wave - these do not exist in nature.

So that is for the sound itself. What about music?
Well, obviously, synthesized sounds were a major revolution in the way we make, perceive and interact with music.

There are many routes you can take to explore the subject. I suggest two:
    1) Search Freesound for the sounds of classic (or not) synths (I am sure you will find plenty) and then use those sounds to create your composition.
    2) Explore the point when extreme sample manipulation becomes a synthesis technique in its own right. This can mean some new age efects/techniques such as granular effects/re-synthesis or spectral effects and processing.
But lets not forget that a lot can be achieved with simpler and older techniques (such as pitch shifting, enlopes and layering) to turn a sound into something completely new.

These are just suggestions, please don't feel restricted to or by them. If you and yout partner have found a different more exciting path, take it!

    RULES:
    1 - Don't use natural unprocessed sounds
2 - You must give attribution to any sounds you take from Freesound
3 - You can create your own sounds using synths (hardware/software) as long as you are not using presets. Sounds you create must be uploaded to Freesound and appear on your attribution list too.
4 - Posting yoru entry. As usual, make a post in this thread with a link to your track. Preferred place to house the tracks is Soundcloud, but other places acceptable. Please make your track downloadable.
5 - Entries for this dare are joint (collaboration) entries, limited to one entry per team. One partner submits the entry on behalf of both team members.
6 - Both team members must vote or the team gets disqualified. You cannot vote for your team's entry tongue
7 - Please use this thread for submissions only. For anything else use the discussion thread.
8 - SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE: has been extended by one day and is now 16/Dec 11pm GMT.

We used a stretched seagull sound. The original seagull cry came from this recording:

This is the sample-list for the intro of our entry "Attention Please".
All sounds in the intro have been either resynthesized and or where heavily synthesized already.

They were all dynamically altered using Nebula Voltera Technologies on the busses and master
    output.

Mastering has been done using Nebula3, which introduced synthesized models of true analog gear.

the main reason for this is to create a sense of warmth and further polish the sound in a more dynamic way than digital EQ's can do. Finally the track was rendered in 48Khz in Reaper on 64bit using 512 pt Sinc.

The following synthesized analog gear was used:

    Rupert Neve Portico 5042
    http://rupertneve.com/products/portico-5042/

Manly Massive Passive Stereo Tube EQ
    http://www.manley.com/msmpx.php

    Manley Variable MU Stereo Limiter/Compressor
    http://www.manley.com/mslc.php

Wollensak Tube Reel to Reel Tape Preamp (1980)
    http://music-electronics-forum.com/t16706/

The following VST Synthesizers were used to create new sounds:

U-HE Diva, Rob Papen Albino, ImageLine Harmor

The following effects we used (mostly)

Sonic Charge BITSPEEK (Creating the airy power words)
    API 2500 Stereo Compressor
    apulSoft APQualizr
Tal Reverb 3 (for looooong algorithmic reverb_
LiquidSonics Reveberate (for short initial attack verb/ambience)

The following new samples have been created for this dare:

    171602 colabdare1_noisepercussion_95bpm.wav
    171603 colabdare1_hightoneperc_95bpm.wav

The following existing samples have been used:

    8099 FragmentedKickExplosion2.wav
    165924 beat_124a1.wav
    3789 glitch_02_StatiqGlitch_(suonho).wav
    16795 Water1.aif
    29589 angels.wav
    27567 MemoryMoon_pad-luminize.wav
    34141 swell pad.wav
    43312 w4.5 b2 3 submarine a.wav
    29869 creepy 1.wav
    17753 Earth2.aif
    30262 Boom 3.wav
    8323 powerwords-english.wav
    41154 DNB KICK 007.wav
    3793 glitch_06_bufferedStatiq_(suonho).wav

That's about it. We enjoyed bringing this piece to you sharing some of the background information on how the intro part came together smile

P.S. initially I had everything hyperlinked, but for some reason the forum saw the message as spam so I had to remove them.

    Dear All,

Just a quick post to let you all know that I was asked by one of the teams for a little extension of the deadline.
I am moving the deadline to 16/Dec 11pm GMT. First post on this thread will be amended to reflect that.

So far we have only 2 entries submitted and one nearly ready to be submitted.
If anyone else is closing to complete and could benefit from a deadline extension please PM me. I can only extend it so far... but might make the difference.
You can also PM me to say that you are not going to submit an entry - I know some of you had technical issues.

All sounds are synthesised special for this dare. Made this together with my mate Cajo.
Escortmarius likes party music, Cajo propose it so we started happily. Cajo offered for bass and melody.
Escortmarius started with 4 notes, C E B D, some synth voices and ritme. Then Cajo stopped because of midi and luddism troubles -
    Escormartius was playing with fun while patiently waiting for something from his partner. Almost a whole month slipped ticking;
then from a bunch of old cables and dusty kbrds Cajo recovered 4+4 chords and some goofy out of time solo notes:
EscortMarius was dreaming of jumping in the snow, he took those slippery sounds and added ritme and fun words and bass and fx and all his pleasure.
Here's the soundscape of an Expedition to Synthopia, real diary of a distant collaboration.

"Экспедиция в Synthopia : expedition to synthopia (in Russian)
So........, please close your eyes and picture yourself in the middle of the Siberian plain (steppe)
Its night, you are surrounded by stars, suddenly you hear a sound that totally overpowers you.
There is nothing you can do, just let it take you were its going........."

    escortmarius:
lead - synth Flstudio Beepmap(bitmap frequentie synth)
This is the main structure of the piece, sound created by using the freesound logo.
bass line - synth MinimogueVA a free vsti synth
synthetic voices - Flstudio text to voice synth
drums - All synthezised using audacity generator.

    cajo:
    lead chords - synth ZynAddSubFX
    lead solo - synth ZynAddSubFX
    reversed cymbal - Majken's Chimera +fx

arranged, edited and entitled by escortmarius
    with FLstudio 10

I've been trying to share our track on the Freesound Dares Soundcloud page but it doesnt seem to be working. I'm sure I've accomplished it with no problem in the past. I click on the "add to groups" button but nothing seems to happen. Anyone got any ideas..?

Well, I found it disappointing that the theme of this dare, synthasise, was largely ignored. It,s such a huge subject with so much potential, and yet very little discussion or exchange of creative ideas took place. I enjoyed listening to the tracks, but, for the most part, I heard very little in the way of creative synthesis. Mostly it was just the usual use of samples and at best tweaked presets.
