    Allow full songs please.

I just uploaded 10-12 tracks I'VE written. No copyrighted samples or anything. Yet still a majority of my uploads where rejected because they are songs. Sound should be free is said ina sample here. Why not music? And what is music in the first place? Sound! I know how tedious and frustrating it is as a freelance, ie. film director with a minimal budget you have to work under, to locate music that is free to use for anyone. I've been writing music since 1990, and produced since 2001. In my library I've got over 200 tunes. And several of them are of that quality they deserved to be made available here. That's why I ask.

The pro's of allowing music is:

+ Easier to find the music you want.
+ Users comments and rating are a good guide for the potential customer.
+ Users can see what other sounds has been downloaded in conjunction with this sound.
+ Users can hear the full length track before downloading it, as with all the other sounds.
+ No need to locate a composer asking him to compose the music for you, and the chance that he takes a heafty payment for the work.
+ As a composer you get a good deal of exponation of your work for a very small buck (nothing).
+ It benefits the spirit of freesound by incresing it's potential.
+ It lets composers gain exposure for their work so that they in the future can earn some cash by serious custommers asking them for help by composing music, and getting paid to do it.

The cons of allowing music is:

    - Large, and potentially slow downloads.
    - Takes some time to preview the track.

This is the song I got approved here. And it's the worst worst piece of junk I've written by far!

Well sir, I see your frustration. I think the reason for the discrepancy in allowed uploads is probably due to different moderators (and differences of opinions). But freesound has always said it doesn't want "songs". I agree somewhat with this policy. Mainly, it frustrates me when I come across "songs" because (1. I make music with samples and prefer small ones (2. it is after all, against the policies. Don't get me wrong, I see the use in having "songs" available for film makers and what not; but i come here to collect paint for my own pallet, not to collect full paintings. Maybe in "nightingale" (the evolution of freesound) there could be a set aside portion for full songs or something. But for right now, I would rather not have more songs clogging my searches. Not to say that I'm against it or that I don't recognize that some made it through. I didn't answer the poll because there was no "I'm down for compromise " button. There are plenty of other sites out there for posting full songs... I know they suck in comparison to the freesound project.. as far as prestige of ratings (in my eyes anyway), but they are out there. Bottom line brother: lets not fight amongst ourselves. I think we have a good thing going here, lets just make sure we keep cool about everything. We can work together to make this site better or we can tear it apart with dichotomy.

Maybe you need to look at CCMixter?
More or less it is like Freesound but for songs.

Freesound is a great library for sound designers and all others who are looking for sound fx, field recordings and so to use within their work non profitly. Small music sample like news tunes and jingle tunes should be okay, but full music tracks is a different thing. There are also plenty of great platforms for free to put up your music, like there is soundcloud.com or bandcamp.com.
I think this place becomes confusing and unusable for those who search for Sound effects, this place is the only place I know to look for samples of that kind on a CC basis.
    Please leave it like that.

I agree with previous points made, that there are multiple places already that host free music and it is good to keep this site focused on a specific purpose, which has been defined to not include finished songs.

I'm for it, but if it is implemented into Freesound, please please have a little check-box that allows us to pick between sound, music, or both on the search page.

    No, no, nope.
    It's freeSOUND.org.
Plenty of other places to get free music.
This is where I come to get pieces of sounds to use in my final project, which may or may not be music.

I too would prefer Freesound remain a sound library. Music samples would dilute and confuse the database.

I have to agree with the majority here. By specializing in effects and soundbytes, I believe Freesound will grow in the right direction. It is already a true library of sounds, and hopefully will go on to be recognized around the www.

Type louder please, I have tinnitus. :¬D

I voted yes but if so I believe it must fall under the same licensing.
Also in my opinion the music all of it the instrumentation and vocals including harmonies ought to all be on separate tracks. ( So all samples can be used. ) .

There might be a copyright problem here and there with all this though I am not sure but I think maybe so in some cases.

    About...

The Freesound Project is a collaborative database of Creative Commons licensed sounds. Freesound focusses only on sound, not songs. This is what sets freesound apart from other splendid libraries like ccMixter

    May it allways be so.

maybe the site should be renamed to freenoise.org, in order to avoid confusing people?
Now seriously, music is just a type of sound in my opinion, so the poster's logic (sound includes music) is perfect. So, yes, the distinction between noise and music made here at FS is quite artificial... but useful

music is just a type of sound

Music is the aesthetically pleasing organization of sound. There is no pretense of organization to most of the sounds on this site. Nor should there be.

The Freesound Project is an organized collection of sounds, each of which has very little inherent organization of its own. But when combined with other sounds, the symbiotic relationship can be realized.

I am afraid I need to say "no" to song uploads.
As with most things, you need to specialize to be really good at what you do. You can do a lot of things reasonably well or do one thing exceedingly well. I prefer the later.
This has never been so important as in the age of the internet and globalization: there are literaly thousands of sites out there hosting user music, very few that host sound (i.e., noises, non musical stuff).

Freesound is the best known place to upload or download sounds. We should keep it that way, rather than muddle the waters and try to do something else that there are plenty of people doing already (and very well at that: CCMixter, Bandcamp, Soundcloud... and even the internet archive www.archive.org)

Our place of gathering at the forums is not a place of or for musicians - musicians, of course, being more than welcome but MUSIC is NOT the FOCUS.
This is a place for people who share a love for sound (musical or not) and who are interested in all aspects of sound (not necessarily musical). A place to discuss sound design, sound engineering, recording techniques, special effects and so much more. - None of these things are usually present in a place where people upload / download music.
Further, this is a place of sharing samples and knowledge and the creative commons license reflects the spirit of what is going on here.

We are, therefore, unique and should remain so
Now, anyone who is using Freesound samples to make music should not feel discouraged or rejected by this: there is a forum specifically dedicated to "your work made with Freesound samples" and most uploaders are more than happy to be personally contacted and hear how their samples have been used. All we ask is that you house your music somewhere else and post a link in the forum instead. - This way you can even attract traffic to your own webpage.

    hmmmm..... erm..... I forgot...

There is no rigid borderline between organized music and sound components. A piece of organized and more or less complex pattern - can be used for texture, loop or synth base, or just remixed in a different way if this is mixable soundscape.

That is very true. And whilst complete music pieces are not accepted "musical elements" such as short basslines, rhythmic patters, acapelas or anything else are gratefully accepted.
Even short melodies can be accepted at moderator's discretion - something of the tpe of the Windows start or shutdown melodies or small melodies for in-game sound effects (think "extra life" little tunes on some arcade games)

In these cloudy areas, moderator discretion applies.
I would tend to approve anything that falls on to the above categories and is not more than a few seconds long.
